Updating Virtualized OS X (10.6.7)

A virtual machine virtualized with VMWare Player on OS X can't be updated using the regular update method in OS X. This is the special set of instructions to update your vitual machine. The guide will be constantly updated to the latest version of OS X.

1. In Windows, download the 10.6.7 update from here: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1361.

2. Also, download this new kernel: http://blog.nawcom.com/?p=640.

3. Now follow these instructions to update to OS X Snow Leopard 10.6.7. This software update is required for the SDK and can not be manually installed through the Apple updater in the OS.

Though the video shows the steps for 10.6.5, the steps are exactly the same.

  1. So your instructions are probably perfect for someone with an intel based processor. They even "work" for AMD but it's extremely glitchy for AMD almost to the point of being useless. Here's another site that actually has you change information in the .vmx file and uses a legacy Darwin file and my Windows 7 64 bit with AMD processor is working BEAUTIFULLY!! Your step by step was easier to understand. This guys just had the files.

  2. i got everything to work up until the update. with the 10.6.7 update i didnt notice the guide on this page so i updated it normally but got a kernel panic saying version mis-matched with kernel and cpu or somtehing like that. then i say the link on this page and i followed it. it works because i dont get the panic.

    however after the grey apple the whole thing just closes. not vmware itself but the virtual machine. its like i pressed the shut down button or something. happened several times and still happening. (not a loop by the way, jst closes then i start it again)

    ANY HELP PLEASE!

  5. I am using Windows 7, Intel COre 2 Duo CPU E8400. Just like above words, the VW can't work since updating to 10.6.7 following the above video. I tried increasing memory, "-x -v busratio=20 cpus=1 arch=i386 -x32", just can't work. And it is my second try, it must be somewhere wrong.

  6. finially, it done.
    1, when start, make sure "darwin_snow.iso" is in your CD driver. Because the OS loader is there;
    2, when the loader starts work, "F8" asap;
    When the system is paused there, you can find that the CD/DVD is not connect to the VM. It is something weird. The machine told Mac there is a CD, then when loader started to work, the CD disappeared. I think it is why the Mac can't boot up.

    3, Thus, before you input "-x -v busratio=20 cpus=1 arch=i386 -x32", manually connect your CD
    to somewhere (maybe an ISO file).

    I tried and successed to boot to 10.6.7. And now I am installing Xcode and iOS SDK

  11. In the middle of 10.6.7 update I got the kernal panic, which then lead to a crash. Now, when I power on my VM I am getting an "operating system not found" message. Is there anyway I can get my VM running again without having to reinstall the OS? I tried running F2 and everything seems in order. Any help is appreciated

  19. I having issues that I cannot get past.

    I can fire up SnowyVM and I use F8 and choose OS X and it would crash.

    I then used the Boot Flag you provided and I can mount the Snow Leopard disc and I can all the way to the customize. Then I use the suggested custom settings (Mac OS_X_10.6.2. Under Kernels = Legacy_kernel_10.2.0. Under Graphic_Drivers = GraphicEnablerin). Then I attempt to install and within about 2 minutes I get an error stating: Install Failed, could not be installed. The Installer could not install some files in "/Volumes/Macintosh HD"

    Any suggestions?

    btw: I'm running Win 7 Ultimate 64
    (w/ visualization support)

    Thanks!
