Sorry about the delay guys, this page has been updated so that Xcode 4.1 does not crash anymore. (August 17, 2011).
If you've tried to virtualize previous versions of OS X, you know that it is a very tedious and time consuming process. This new guide works by giving you a simple VMWare Image. This means that the OS has already been pre-configured on a hard drive. For the most part, there is no need to mess around with boot flags or installation settings
This guide will show how to setup a fully working OS X Lion 10.7 on a Windows machine. This process will take about an hour but most of the time is spent downloading files. This was done on Windows 7 but should work on any OS as long as it meets the requirements.
Requirements
A laptop or desktop computer that supports virtualization (most newer computers do).
At least 1 GB of RAM (the more, the better).
VMWare Workstation (this is a paid program but a little research will get you it for free).
VMWare Hard Drive (vmx files, it is in a self-extracting .exe file)
OS X Lion (VMDK File)
Instructions
Before you start, make sure that you have enabled Virtualization in the BIOS of your computer. This is usually disabled by default by computer manufacturers.
An updated video has been made of all the new steps:
1. From the file downloaded, double click on Mac OS X Lion VMware Files.exe. Click Run then Yes. This will decompress the files.
2. Once done, a folder named Mac OS X Lion VMware Files will appear, double click it.
3. You will need to follow the instructions in this video to unlock VMWare. Instead of using the files from the video, use the files from Step 2.
4. From Step 1, you should have also gotten a folder named Mac OS X Lion. Open that up and open the file named Mac OS X Lion.vmx. Double-click this file. It will open in VMWare Workstation.
5. On the left column, click on Edit Virtual Machine Settings. In the Memory tab, you can edit how much RAM OS X will get. In the Sound tab, change to Specify host sound card, change it to your sound card. After the machine has started and sound doesn't work, change to Use default host sound card.
6. At the bottom of the box is an Add button, click it. Select Hard Disk from the left, click Next. Choose Use and existing virtual disk.
7. Browse for the Mac OS X Lion Installer.vmdk that was downloaded from the torrent. Click Finish. Click OK to close the box.
8. On the left column, click Power on this virtual machine.
9. If a box asks to repair the image, click Repair. Once the box comes up, click I copied it, click OK. A message about the CD Drive may come up, just click OK.
10. The machine should power up in a few moments, ready to go. For ease of use, click in VMWare Workstation, click File > Add to Favorites.
11. You should now have a Install Mac OS X screen. At the top, click Utilities then Disk Utility. Select the 42.45 GB Hard Disk. Click on the Erase tab. Now you can name your hard drive what you want. Then click on Erase. Click Erase again.
12. Once the process is done, close out of the Disk Utility box, the Install screen will come back up. Click Continue, Agree. Select the 40GB Hard Disk to install Lion. Click Install. The process will take about 30 minutes. Once it's done, the account setup will start. Once that's done, Lion will start.
13. To be able to use the machine in full screen, in OS X open Preferences, click on Displays. Now select the resolution of your monitor. Now in VMWare, click on the Full Screen button on the toolbar (10th button from the left).
14. Now you're done, you can use this OS as a normal to install programs.
Damn, i was following the old guide xD, i downloaded VMware player, does it still works?
ReplyDeleteYou have to use VMWare Workstation, it is a paid program. A simple torrent search will get you the registration keys.
ReplyDeleteHow i can acess the HD, to put downloaded files on mac?
ReplyDeleteIn VMWork Station, go to 'VM' at the very top then to 'Settings'. Go to the 'Options' tab, then the 'Shared Folders' section. Click on 'Always enabled'. Then at the bottom, click on 'Add'.
ReplyDeleteNow you can add the folders from your Windows HD (like your downloads folder, Desktop, etc).
To get to the files, go into OS X, in a few moments a blue 'VMWare Shared Folders' icon will appear on your Desktop, click it to access the directories that your listed. If you want to open a file from Windows, make sure you first copy it to the OS X Desktop(or another place) or else you'll get permission errors.
Do you now if XCode works in this version?I install and goes ok,but then the icon dont appear,i searched in the HD and found it,but when i start it i just get a crash...
ReplyDelete@Anonymous, looks like everyone using this VM is experiencing this problem. If you find a solution please let us know so we can update the article.
ReplyDeleteah man.. its taken me a week to get the snow leopard working... when i finally got the xcode 4download it refuses to run until i upgrade to 10.6.6 ... and if i do that then it keeps crashing..
ReplyDeletecan i do anything about this without downloading the lion and starting all over..
For anyone's interest - I can't get Xcode 4 to run within Lion following this guide, it crashes every time on startup.
ReplyDeleteAnother guide or steps on how to successfully get Xcode 4 running within this would be useful to everyone I'm sure, as I'm currently considering hackintosh-ing or buying a cheap mac mini for development as cannot find another option.
Does this work with AMD processors or is it still strictly Intel?
ReplyDeleteThe CPU has been disabled by the guest operating system. You will need to power off or reset the virtual machine at this point.
ReplyDeleteI get this message every time...
when i extract the Mac OS X Lion VMware Image, the windows batch file do not appear, i am using 64-bit system if that counts. instead a " satvis-windows file appear. the rest is okey , but when i power on the machine it says "Mac OS X is not supported with software virtualization. Great!! that was it, thank you!
ReplyDeleteI have the same problem there:

- And folders can´t be shared from pc to macosx
Any ideas to solve it??
I have the same problems above plus I can't watch youtube after installing the flash player. It seems like it's playing but the screen is black.
ReplyDeleteif you do not have sound card installed, what is for watching YouTube?
ReplyDeletebut anyway, youtube is good after installing flash.
same three issues as above above
fixed the two issues.
ReplyDelete1. Screen Resolutions
go http://sourceforge.net/projects/vmsvga2/files/Audio/
Download installer for VMsvga2 v1.2.3 versions (234.4 KB)
2. Audio
same page, download EnsoniqAudioPCI_v1.0.3_Lion.pkg
And then in your Mac OS X Lion install those two packages.
W:)
fixed the last one.
ReplyDelete1. use the link to download the file and extract it.
http://www.mediafire.com/?dhbxnndmznw
2. you will find the darwin_snow.iso. mount this one to you vm cd. the vmware tools is inside it. run it and restart your vm then a new folder will be your desktop.

Hi Guys, is there any ways to share the clipboard between Windows and MacOS running in VM? E.g. so I can copy some text in Windows and paste it in a program in MacOS?
ReplyDeleteThanks!
/Daniel
Thanks W, the screen resolution worked, I didn't test the sound but I have a problem at vmware tools.
ReplyDeleteAfter installing it on my lion I get a shortcut on my desktop called "WMware Shared Folders". But I click on it it can't find the source folder.
Also if I try to update my VMware Tools it says "Could not find component on update server... "
Can anyone help with these?
Y.
Daniel, I can use clipboard between Mac and windows. Use your mouse but not keyboard.
ReplyDeleteY, did you add the folder when you config your shared folders?
Do not understand "update my VMware tools".
W:)
Like other people I get the error:
ReplyDelete"The CPU has been disabled by the guest operating system. You will need to power off or reset the virtual machine at this point."
Any help would be appreciated.
I fixed the black screen Youtube playing problem. Just simply right click on the player-> setting -> uncheck "enable hardware acceleration".
ReplyDeleteOn step 10, I ave a black screen with a lot of "xxx :Removable HardDisk - Alias xxxxxxxxxx" and thena message "Press ESC in 5 seconds to skip startup.nsh, any other key to continue." At this point any action (press Essc, press other key, don't press anything) have the same result: I came out to the shell and anything else happened.
ReplyDeleteI'm using Vmware Workstation 7 on a Windows 7 Home Premium 64.
In the vmware.log appear this message error "Error VIX_E_TOOLS_NOT_RUNNING in VMAutomationTranslateGuestRpcError(): VMware Tools are not running in the guest"
Any idea about what is wrong?
At step 10 I get a white screen what should I do?
ReplyDelete@W: how do I config my shared folders and which folder do I add please?
ReplyDelete@Anonymous having a white screen at step 10: run windows.bat as administrator. this was already said above.
Y.
oh and with "update my vmware" I mean my vmware tells me that my vmware tools is not up to date and that I should log in to my guest os and click the button "update tools" which I do. And it says "component not found on update server". Maybe it's because I can't find the folder "VMware Tools" in my vmware directory?
ReplyDeleteY.
Running windows 7 64 bit, it works flawlessly... thanks alot!
ReplyDeletei got the cpu has been disabled by the guest operating system.
ReplyDeleteTO FIX THIS: Enable Ace Features in VMware (lil icon on the left).

Anyone help I am stuck at the white screen every I try to install Mac OS X Lion an Vmware Workstation 7.1.4, I am running Intel based windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit. Anyone HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteI tried running windows.bat as administrator, but error 5 occurs?
ReplyDeleteHi Guys,
ReplyDeletei'am trying to follow your tutorial. Everything went really well till the installation process is half done. Then an error occurs, saying that the "Install Failed". Any ideas what to do?
Thanks!
Simon
When ever i press "play" (step 8). I get the following message: "Mac OS X is not supported with software virtualization. To run Mac OS X you need a host on which VMware Workstation supports hardware virtualization." I think it has to do with the unlocker or something. I'll reinstall everything and try again
ReplyDeleteI have followed your tutorial and everthing worked. I downloaded and installed Xcode 4. It cashed. Do you have a clue?
ReplyDeleteYeah, you should be using 4.1 as the tutorial states, not 4.0? :)
ReplyDeleteThe guide is great, I've done everything and got it installed, however I'm having difficulty connecting to the internet on the mac, can you please elaborate on the exact network settings for both the mac and the host windows 7 pc? Thanks!
ReplyDeleteIt says :Mac OS X is not supported with software virtualization. To run Mac OS X you need a host on which VMware Workstation supports hardware virtualization. What sould i do now ?
ReplyDeletewhen I press "play" I get the following message : "The disk "C:\Mac OS X Lion Installer.vmdk" has internal consistency errors that may be caused by partial corruption of the disk file. It is recommended that you restore a backup of this virtual machine. If you do not have a backup, VMware Player can repair the disk, but there is a possibility that the data on the disk may be corrupt and affect the stability of the guest.
ReplyDeleteDo you wish to repair the disk and continue?"
any ideas what's wrong?
What does the unlocker windows_32.exe file do? It wants the vmware installation in the default path, which is not a viable option for me for disk space reasons.
ReplyDelete"when I press "play" I get the following message : "The disk "C:\Mac OS X Lion Installer.vmdk" has internal consistency errors that may be caused by partial corruption of the disk file. ReplyDeleteDo you wish to repair the disk and continue?""
man, it's not a problem! just press "yes".
"It says :Mac OS X is not supported with software virtualization. To run Mac OS X you need a host on which VMware Workstation supports hardware virtualization. What sould i do now ?"
ReplyDeleteyou need to enable the virtualization on the CPU setting in your BIOS. if you have an intel core inside (both 1st and 2nd gens) you just need to activate something that is called "intel virtualization technology".
Hello mate, when I try to run the VM It get right up to the apple screen and then gives me
ReplyDelete"The CPU has been disabled by the guest operating system."
I did enable ACE, still does the same thing. Im running on Win7 64 AMD Athlon II P320 Dual core.
Thank you for your help in advance
m using win7 64bit.
ReplyDeleteI have downloaded Mac OS X LION image... m using vmware 6.5...
I am following the above steps shown.
After powering on through vmware,,,following error dialogue box is displayed :
" Unable to open file "D:\X LION\Mac OS X Lion VMware Image\Mac OS X Lion\Mac OS X Lion.vmdk":
One of the disks in this virtual machine is already in use by a virtual machine or by a snapshot.
While unlocking I get message "Too few match sites" what should I do plz help
ReplyDeleteI am getting the following error when vmware is powered on

Reason: Failed to lock the file.

ReplyDeleteWhile installing my .vmdk files...in step 12th....my installation frezes after about 4 mins remaining....for more than 1 hr I see same screen.....I have about 300 GB empty in my harddisk.....please let me know why my installation dosent move ahead? and what should I do ?
ReplyDeleteI am having vmware workstation 6.5, and mac os x lion 10.7. The above steps does not apply to that.
ReplyDeleteI am using win7 64bit
So, can any one provide the link for that?
please
The requirements for memory are quite off. Lion won't even let you install if you allocate less than 2GB of RAM, and on my machine that has 2GB I can't even install; the memory starts thrashing (Task Manager reports 95% memory utilization which drops to 20% when I power off the VM).
ReplyDelete--"when I press "play" I get the following --message : "The disk "C:\Mac OS X Lion --Installer.vmdk" has internal consistency --errors that may be caused by partial --corruption of the disk file. ReplyDelete--Do you wish to repair the disk and continue?""
--man, it's not a problem! just press "yes"
man, it IS a problem!!
After pressing yes i get this error:
Cannot open the disk 'C:\Users\Binder\Desktop\Mac OS X Lion Bootable .vmdk (For VMware)\Mac OS X Lion Installer.vmdk' or one of the snapshot disks it depends on.
Reason: The specified virtual disk needs repair.
It'd be nice to have some credit given here :)
ReplyDeleteBy the way, people with no hardware virtualization support, I've fixed that now. Also, as opposed to what the guide states above, you'd need 2GB of RAM in your VM as Lion requires 2GB to install. My latest version works on AMD (or at least some AMD.
ReplyDeleteMake sure you have VMware 7.1.3 or 7.1.4.
~Official email for support: zackehsoul@hotmail.co.uk~
Can this setup be done on windows vista (32 bit) ?
ReplyDeleteI did everything, but when I go to power up, it tells me that it can't do software virtualization, that it needs hardware virtualization. The hardware virtualization is turned on in the bios.
ReplyDeleteCan you help me?
I am running a Dell Inspiron 1721 with Windows Vista.

Has anyone got this working on an AMD phenom processor?
ReplyDeleteFor those who are getting "disk repair" error and can't repair clicking "yes" with error "Reason: The specified virtual disk needs repair"... Are you using vmware workstation earlier than 7.1.1? :-)
ReplyDeleteIn case, I found the solution here: http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=1023856
It's a known bug of vmware, just donwload the proper file (see bottom of the page) according to your version, follow the instruction to replace original "vmware-vdiskmanager.exe" and launch the repair program from a command prompt as specified (it was not necessary to reboot the PC in my case).
Worked with win xp pro, start your VM: installation of Lion will now start correctly!
I was getting also the "One of the disks in this virtual machine is already in use by a virtual machine or by a snapshot". Be sure you have quitted all vmware* applications you have (maybe you open the VM twice because it's slow...).
ReplyDeleteThe VM file can be opened just by one instance of VMware...
its getting stuck on the white screen after the apple.please help me
ReplyDeletemy pc amd phenom x6 ı'm stuck at the apple logo screen d
ReplyDeleteWorked great with VMWare Workstation 7.1.3 and Windows 7 x64.

ReplyDeleteMac OS X is not supported with software virtualization. To run Mac OS X you need a host on which VMware Workstation supports hardware virtualization.
what is the solution for this ?
Just wondering if anybody got it working on VMware 8.0
ReplyDeleteI followed all the steps but I get an error message of "There was a problem installing 'Mac OS X'. Try reinstalling."
ReplyDeleteApple docs say that I need to reset the PRAM by pressing and holding the Command-Option-P-R buttons but I'm having trouble trying to do this on VMWare Workstation 7.1
Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks
I worked around the error above by deleting the nvram file. So far so good, Lion install is about halfway done.
ReplyDeleteI've installed all the packages on a Dell Vostro 3750 Laptop (I5) : all is working fine exept the keyboard. I can't use it!... It seems not to be recognized on the Mac OS... Any idea?
ReplyDeleteThanks
Works fine for me on VMware 8.0. You have to run the unlucker though (despite of the errors it gives) or the image won't run properly, but it won't let you create a new Mac virtual machine.
ReplyDeleteInstalling... i7 2600 W764
ReplyDeleteIt doens't startup. I only see the apple logo and nothing else. I've got Workstation 8 + the patch for that version. Virtualisation is turned on in the bios and I've got an AMD Phenom 2 X4 955.
ReplyDeleteAny ideas?

Is it only for me that the second download link (VMWare Harddrive) wont work? it leads to a page saying the file has been removed...
ReplyDeleteI can't get the second or third link to work...I've searched for other torrents with that same name, but none of them are correct, they usually just have the .vmdk file. Any help would be appreciated!
ReplyDeleteYeah the download link for the VMWare Harddrive won't work for me either! Any help with this please?
ReplyDeleteVMWare Hard Drive (vmx files)is no longer available. Please fix that!

ReplyDeleteStuck at apple logo, any help?

ReplyDeletehttp://www.mediafire.com/?a42mf9t1z2sz266
Make sure you run your VMware unlock script IN ADMINISTRATOR MODE. If you don't do that, it won't work and the rest of the installation will fail. The best way to see if there were errors is to open an administrator command prompt (Start->Programs->Accessories and RIGHT CLICK command prompt, and select Run As Administrator), cd to the directory with the appropriate .bat file, and execute it.
As mentioned, you also need to make sure virtualization technology is turned on in your BIOS. I forgot to do it on mine and was getting errors, including the one about long mode. Make sure you power down your machine completely after you change this setting.
Confirmed to work on Windows 7 64 bit running VMWare 8.
I got the setup to work after messing with some settings on vmware workstation 7 but i updated to workstation 8. Now when i load it like it says it loads the apple screen and then just goes to a white screen with the loading cursor? Help please.

ReplyDelete@All and @Sapio: Facing Same Problem What should i do ? Please Help me..
ReplyDeleteOn step 10, I ave a black screen with a lot of "xxx :Removable HardDisk - Alias xxxxxxxxxx" and thena message "Press ESC in 5 seconds to skip startup.nsh, any other key to continue." At this point any action (press Essc, press other key, don't press anything) have the same result: I came out to the shell and anything else happened.

should right-click on the file and choose "Run As Administrator". It took 30min. for me to figure that out.
By the looks of the comments, many people getting the CPU error are running AMD 955's. I've got the same processor and having the same issue.
ReplyDeleteSeems best way to get it working is getting the HAZARD version from TPB and using virtual box. Bypassing VMWare all together.
I've tried everything I've found on multiple forums. 've read every comment and did every suggestion, and it just doesn't want to work.
Things I've realized the most is people just write the same questions over and over and over again and don't bother reading anyone elses answers. Unfortunately, I don't think I'll ever get it working in VMWare.
@Mike
ReplyDeletedude I spent 2 or 3 days to make it fully work. Still it may have some issues that i haven't faced yet. I am using Intel-based laptop but i made some search for you and found a video on youtube.
url->http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fWSiZzKyMPk&feature=related
There are some people who use AMD like you do and became successful. Maybe you and other fellows who use AMD may contact one of those people.
Hope this video helps.

ReplyDeleteThe latest version of Xcode is working in this Mac OS X Lion(virtualized) on Win7. I haven't had any problems yet. Follow the instructions one by one.
I didnt get the .exe file when I downloaded it
ReplyDeletejust a info from my experience. for those who encounter "too few match sites" while unlocking VMWare, make sure the unlocker is made for your version of VMWare. The one provided in this tutorial can unlock VMWare workstation v7.1. So if maybe you have vmware workstation 8, it will not work. just try to find an other unlocker available on the web. To know which version is supported by your unlocker, read the README file.
ReplyDeletegreat tuto. Very detailed steps, and it working for me. thanks

For all of the above people who keep posting about "Mac OS X is not supported with software virtualization".. He says right in the instructions at the start, you MUST ENABLE HARDWARE VIRTUALIZATION IN YOUR BIOS!!!
ReplyDeleteThanks a lot. I tried in AMD x2 215, but it was difficult and time-consuming. Then I tried in my Intel laptop and it worked as you said, great!
ReplyDeleteis the version of VMWareWorkstation important?
ReplyDeleteSorry if i missed it in the thread, but was the problem of hanging with a rainbow cursor after an Apple logo at start up ever answered? I am having this same problem.. boots just fine, goes to an Apple logo, then a white screen with a rainbow cursor and nothing....
